TikTok and Instagram Are Now Career Platforms
Hey Superstar!
Remember how we used to see TikTok and Instagram as just places to unwind, laugh, scroll endlessly, or catch up on trends? Well, not anymore. These platforms have rapidly become launchpads for careers, portfolios in motion, and even digital CVs.
People are getting hired off their “a day in my life” reels. Creatives are landing brand deals from 15-second edits. Even the tech bros are sharing “How I automated my mom’s grocery list with Python” and gaining serious traction, attention and possibly employment contracts. Content is currency. Visibility is value. And those apps are the new LinkedIn, it just comes with better fonts and filters.
But why and how is this happening?
Simple. Employers and clients are watching. Not from the shadows (okay, maybe a little bit), but they’re scrolling through socials like the rest of us. They want to see how you think, what you know, and if you can tell a story, all in under a minute. It is not enough to say you’re “creative” or a “content creator” anymore. You have to show us. Show them.
And here's how to make it work for you:
Pick your niche and run with it: Whether you're a data analyst, copywriter, baker, virtual assistant, or a digital marketer, document what you do. Break it down. Share tips. Make it easy to consume. You don’t need a ring light and a rooftop apartment to get started. Start with your phone and that dusty window light in your room.
Be helpful, not just viral: Don’t chase clout for the sake of it. Share something that makes people think, laugh, or learn. When you do that consistently, you build trust. And trust is what will bring in opportunities.
Use that DM button wisely: Slide in with purpose, the DM button isn’t just for “Hey beautiful.” Use it to pitch. Introduce yourself. Collaborate. Thank someone for sharing useful content. Start the conversation. You’d be shocked how many people respond when you respectfully shoot your shot.
People have gone from creating thoughtful, well-curated contents on Instagram and Tiktok and have gone from that to signing employment contracts at their dream companies infact.
So if you’re reading this and still shy to show your work online, this is your sign. Post that carousel. Record that tutorial. Share that client result. There are “eyes” watching, and one of them might just be your next employer, client, or collaborator that could become a game changer in your career.
Instagram and TikTok aren’t just distractions anymore. They’re your display shelf. Your pitch deck. Your career audition tape too.
The only question is: are you putting something valuable out there?
JOB SEARCH HACK
Tap Into Referrals — The Shortcut Nobody Talks About
Referrals are the underrated cheat code in the job search game. While everyone’s busy refreshing job boards, tweaking cover letters, and swimming in the endless pool of online applications, referred candidates are quietly skipping the line.
Why are referrals so powerful?
Because they come with built-in trust. Employers are more likely to take a chance on someone recommended by a team member than a name pulled from a digital stack of 500 resumes. Think of it like getting into a VIP event, it gets easier when someone on the inside drops your name at the door. Studies have also shown that referred hires tend to get hired faster, stay longer, and perform better. So it’s not just about getting your foot in the door, it is about staying in the room and thriving there.
But here’s what people often get wrong, they assume they don’t know anyone who can refer them. This is most of the time not true. You don’t need to be besties with a CEO or have a cousin in HR. Start small. That guy you did NYSC with, that course mate who’s now in tech or that lady who posts about her company on LinkedIn.
The trick is to not come off as desperate while reaching out. Instead of sending a “please help me, I’m jobless” text, try something like:
“Hey! I saw you work at XYZ. What’s it like there?” Then ease into your ask. Let it flow naturally from a place of genuine curiosity.
And when you finally ask, make it easy for them. Don’t just type “any openings?” and disappear. Send your CV. Share a short note or a cover letter on what you’re looking for, the kind of roles you're gunning for, and what makes you a solid candidate. You’re not begging, you are giving them something to work with.
Also, another very important thing is to never underestimate the power of a job well done. A referral doesn’t always have to come from your current or close circle. Past employers, old colleagues, or even someone you freelanced for, if they liked your work, they’re often willing to put in a word.
In a market where standing out feels impossible, referrals are still one of the most effective ways to land your next opportunity. Use them well.

OPPORTUNITIES for YOU!

Crikey, my head is exploding! A few weeks ago, I learned that for young people handing out your Instagram is the new 'giving a bloke your phone number'.
And now Instagram is a career platform too (I'm ignoring Tik Tok, the only time I look at it is when my daughter sends me something).
Great tips and an eye opener for people who think no one is looking at their socials when they apply for a job.
This was genuinely insightful. Thank you.
