Thriving in the Workplace as an Introvert
There are many types of employees on a Sunday night. Let’s talk about two.
There’s Funmi, who’s planning for the new week and setting up hangouts with three colleagues from the office. Come Monday, she’s moving from desk to desk, “heying” and “hiing”, updating everyone on the colour code for the hangouts.
Then there’s Chuks, who’s also making plans. He’s sorting his outfits for the week while wondering how the weekend flew by so fast. But unlike Funmi, Chuks is dreading one thing about the office—people. The walk up to his desk. The unplanned meetings. Chuks isn’t looking forward to any of these. Chuks is an introvert.
In a world that seems to reward the loudest voices in the room, it’s easy for introverts like Chuks to feel like they’re at a disadvantage in the workplace. But here’s the truth: Being an introvert is not a limitation. Once you know your strengths and how to use them, you’ll thrive. If you’re like Chuks, it’s your lucky day because we have a few tips that can help you get through the work week.
Make it clear from the start: Instead of trying to adapt to everyone else’s style, speak up about how you prefer to communicate. If you prefer emails over meetings or virtual instead of physical meetings, say so.
Try group tasks: It might seem a bit odd, but teamwork can actually help introverts feel happier and more effective at work. Working in a group can be a great way to make friends and build a small circle where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts.
Build relationships one at a time: If big groups aren’t your thing, focus on connecting with people one-on-one. It’s less overwhelming and feels more natural. You could also find other introverted colleagues to bond with.
The most important thing is not to try to be someone you’re not. Focus on your strengths and your job, of course. Let your work speak for you when you can’t.
JOB SEARCH HACK
Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile
Your LinkedIn profile is more than a resume. It's a space where every picture and word you share speaks volumes about your professional self.
So, today’s hack is:
Spend 30 minutes to an hour each week polishing your page. You have to keep your LinkedIn page active. Aim for at least two meaningful posts per week.
Start with a professional photo. Craft a summary that doesn’t just read like a bio but also clearly states your value proposition. Remember, recruiters actively scout LinkedIn profiles, so every update matters.
Networking is also essential.
Make it a habit to connect with professionals in your field, engage with their content, and share your own insights.
Also, don’t be shy about using LinkedIn’s messaging features. Reach out directly to CEOs or managing directors with personalised pitches about your interests and the value you bring.
We’ve told you this before, our dear friend — shoot your shot at employers!
